Haroon Gunn-Salie has a background in Cape Town’s graffiti scene. During his student years, he focused on sculpture and his present work is dialogue-based and site-specific. For Gunn-Salie, art has a social objective and is an important tool for change – through aesthetic and emotional dimensions it can speak to us in other ways than texts and history books. In many of his works he examines how the legacy of apartheid continues to affect the collective consciousness in present-day South Africa. Using artistic interventions, Gunn-Salie shows that history is not just something that happened and that we have to face passively. Instead, he considers that we can effect change, make a difference and shift power relationships by trying to rewrite history in a way that includes more perspectives.
