Concerning the Spiritual in Art - in Modernism and after
Despite breaking away from traditional religion, artistic modernism remained deeply intertwined with the spiritual. In this Thursday Session, the renowned British theologian and philosopher George Pattison will explore the spiritual in modern art in a discussion with art historian Max Liljefors. What did modern artists mean by ‘the spiritual’? Is there a place for spirituality in art today?
George Pattison is Professor of Theology & Modern European Thought at the University of Glasgow. He is the author of numerous publications in the intersecting field of religion and
aesthetics, including "Art, Modernity and Faith" (1991).
Max Liljefors is professor of Art History and Visual Studies at Lund University. He is the author of numerous publications on modern and contemporary art and image theory, including "Bilder
av Förintelsen" (2002).
The event is presented by the research project ’Approaching the Numinous – Intersections between Religion and Aesthetics in a Secular Society’, funded by the LMK foundation.
